On Wednesday October 7th, the Cincinnati Cyclones announced the re-signing of Canadian forward Mason Mitchell. The two sides agreed to terms on a standard player contract for the upcoming season. Despite being on a contract with the AHL’s Rochester Americans, Mitchell spent most of the season with the Cyclones.
Mitchell is a left-handed shooter who originally hails from Edmonton Alberta. He played college hockey with the Seawolves men’s hockey team before starting as a pro in 2017-18. In doing so, he joined the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League.
With Hershey, he played 29 games where he recorded one goal and four assists for five points. He also added 35 penalty minutes. During the same season, Mitchell was optioned to the South Carolina Stingrays where he played six games. With them, Mitchell racked up four goals along with three assists for a total of nine points. He also committed one minor penalty.
Following the season’s conclusion, Mitchell would re-sign with the Bears for the next season. In 2018-19, Mitchell played 11 games, putting up one assist while also adding eight penalty minutes. Looking ahead to this season, he spent another nine games with the Stingrays hockey club.
With South Carolina, Mitchell recorded six goals along with four assists for a total of 10 points. He also added 18 penalty minutes. In 2019-20, the forward would sign with Rochester, but would spent the season with the Cincinnati Cyclones. With Cincinnati, Mitchell would score 18 goals along with 13 assists for 32 points. Doing so in 57 games, he also added 48 penalty minutes.
In a statement from the left-handed shooter, he said upon signing his contract on Wednesday, “I’m excited to get back at it in front of our great fans in the Queen City. We have some unfinished business to take care of this year and I am looking forward to a great season!”
As for the thoughts of Matt Thomas, head coach of the Cincinnati Cyclones, he said of the team’s latest signing, “Mason is an important player for us. He brings a great combination of speed, size and skill. His impact physically and ability in big moments to score critical goals will be crucial to our team success.”
