Scouting Info:

In Daniil’s past two OHL seasons, he has proven to be an offensive-defensemen. He plays a puck passing and shooting game, similar to defensemen Olli Maatta in my eyes. Chayka is still growing into his build and this will come along with the way he can add more muscle mass to become a stronger and more physical, yet wiser defender. He does hold his own in the defensive zone, as recently displayed in the Karjala Cup.

He’s teammates with fellow countryman Shakir Mukhamadullin, a current prospect of the New Jersey Devils. Mukhamadullin, 18-years-old, is one of the most notable Russian defensive prospects. Russia lacks elite-level blue-line prospects and Chayka is one of the most notable of such. He’s been impressive during his brief stint in Russia and has spent two seasons in the KHL. This of course no easy task for a 17/18-year-old.

He’s currently on loan with CSKA Moskva (Moscow) and has seen time split between the VHL and MHL. Both these leagues are responsible for helping grow and develop young talent. This process of grooming guides players en route to becoming KHL ready. This is a positive sign that CSKA is doing their due diligence in grooming Chayka into a well-rounded defender.
