The Curious Case Of Adam Mascherin

After being drafted 38th overall in the second round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, it looks like Adam Mascherin will get to hear his name called on draft day one more time. Adam Mascherin informed the Florida Panthers that he does not intend to sign with the team that drafted him in 2016. The Panthers did not trade his rights to another team and Mascherin was not signed by the June 1st deadline, meaning that Adam Mascherin will re-enter the draft.

The June 1st deadline has come and gone meaning that Adam Mascherin will re-enter the draft. Adam Mascherin has been a consistent scorer in the OHL for the past 4 seasons. In his rookie season in the OHL, Mascherin put up 12 goals and 17 assists, totalling up to 29 points in 62 games played.

He was named to the OHL Second All-Rookie Team for his efforts in his rookie season in the OHL after being drafted 2nd overall in the 2014 OHL Priority Selection Draft. His second season in the OHL was a big step up for the 19-year-old left-winger. In 65 games played, he had 35 goals and 46 assists, totalling up to 81 points recorded.

In the same amount of games in his third OHL season, he recorded an incredible 100 points. This season in 67, Mascherin has recorded 40 goals and 46 assists, totalling up to 86 points. Mascherin has been scrutinized for his small size at just 5’9, 192 lbs, but what Adam Mascherin lacks in size he makes up for with his work ethic, energy, speed, and his powerful shot.

He is a fast player who does not let his size get in the way of his game. Mascherin is not afraid to be physical and is constantly seen battling tougher opponents and finding success in doing so. Adam Mascherin does not let his size get in the way of his offensive abilities.

He is similar to Chicago Blackhawks rookie Alex DeBrincat. DeBrincat is another small forward who had a great shot and is always working hard and not letting his size deter him from scoring. In his first season in the NHL, Alex DeBrincat recorded 52 points in 82 games.

Adam Mascherin is taller and heavier than Alex DeBrincat but if DeBrincat has been able to do so well in his first season in the NHL, then it is reasonable to say that Adam Mascherin will not look out-of-place at the NHL level. An argument could be made that DeBrincat was a better producer offensively In the OHL then Mascherin, but it is important to note that DeBrincat played with Dylan Strome in each of his three seasons in the OHL. In his first, he played with Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid and Taylor Raddysh in both his second and third OHL seasons.

Adam Mascherin, on the other hand, never really had an elite teammate player like McDavid, Strome or Raddysh. Mascherin was usually the best or second best player on the team offensively, making his statistics all the more impressive and further helping his case for future NHL success. Adam Mascherin could be ready for the NHL as early as next season.

The Florida Panthers have lost rights to the OHL star as they were not able to reach an agreement on a contract before the June 1st Deadline. Now the Question is who should draft Adam Mascherin in the upcoming draft and what round should we expect to see him drafted in?

The Florida Panthers should have traded Adam Mascherin’s rights when they had the chance. Instead, they lost them for nothing. Mascherin is a highly skilled prospect that the Panthers should have been able to get at the very least a late-round selection in exchange for Mascherin’s rights.

The Florida Panthers former second-round pick will be hearing his name called at the NHL draft for the second time in just 3 years come June 22 and 23rd at the American Airlines Arena, home of the Stars in Dallas, Texas.

What Teams Could Use Mascherin?

Any team would be lucky to have a prospect with the skill of Adam Mascherin. The whole point of the draft is to select new prospects to add to your team for the future and Adam Mascherin is one who can make a big difference right away. It has been almost 2 years since he got drafted by the Panthers which means he had 2 seasons after he was drafted to develop his game.

This means that he should be ready to mak the jump to the NHL or AHL in the near future, maybe even as early as next season. This means that there would be a number of teams that may be interested in the Kitchener Rangers forward as he could make the jump to the pros very soon. The only problem is that due to the fact that he did not want to sign with the team that drafted him, he may have a hard time getting picked in the first few rounds.

With the 2018 NHL draft class already considered to be a deep one, the addition of Mascherin makes it that much deeper. Due to his age and the fact that he refused to sign with the Panthers, teams might have a hard time using a high pick to take Adam Mascherin over other highly regarded prospects as there might be some character issues and there is no telling if he will sign with the team that drafts him. He should however without a doubt get drafted in the first four rounds.

Mascherin will not be taken in the first round unless there is a team that wants his services that badly. It is reasonable to assume he would either be taken in the second round or the third and no later than the fifth round. Mascherin is highly skilled and has proved that he can do it all offensively and even though he did not want to sign with the team that drafted him, he still has undeniable skill that all teams are looking for.

The teams that should draft him would be the ones in desperate need of offensive help or in rebuilding modes. Adam Mascherin could make the NHL as early as next season so he would be a good fit on these kinds of teams. Teams losing notable free agents to free agency could also benefit by drafting Mascherin.

The Detroit Red Wings would benefit from drafting Mascherin as they have an aging offence and are looking to get younger. Mascherin could slot into the lineup very soon and help take the load off of aging players. With the Sedin twins retiring from the NHL, the Vancouver Canucks will have more open roster spots next season.

Adam Mascherin could slot into their lineup next season and help add to an already top group of forwards. Nashville is also a team who is in need of wingers and youth. Why not add a young winger.

Adam Mascherin could be a good fit for the Predators as well. The New York Rangers also have a high assortment of draft picks and could use a player like Adam Mascherin to help aid their rebuild. Overall, there really are not a lot of teams that could not use Adam Mascherin.

Not all teams may need him but pretty much every team could use him. He has experience and could slot into the lineup right away potentially. The annoying part about drafting high-end prospects is that sometimes there is a wait for the players to come up to the NHL as they need time to develop in other leagues.

Adam Mascherin will not have this downside. Any team that selects Adam Mascherin will be acquiring a high-end prospect ready for professional-level hockey (either NHL or AHL) right away. They will not have to wait for him to be ready to play the professional North American game.

There are numerous teams with multiple picks in the same round. It would be a good idea for one of these teams to take the risk and use one of those picks to draft Adam Mascherin. These teams that have the picks to make this happen without jeopardizing their chances of picking another highly skilled younger prospects would be the New York Rangers, who have seven picks in the first 3 rounds, the Montreal Canadiens, who have ten picks in the first 5 rounds including four in the second round, the Detroit Red Wings, who have 11 picks in the entire draft, and the Minnesota Wild, who have 3 picks in the third round.

All of these teams could draft Mascherin and it would be a good idea considering the fact that he is a top prospect with four years of experience playing in the OHL. These teams have multiple picks so they are still able to draft other younger prospects as well as Mascherin which ultimately eliminates the overall risk of drafting him. Other teams could also draft the Kitchener Rangers star forward, even if they do not have many extra draft picks.

Teams should see how much potential the 19-year-old forward has and may very well be willing to take the chance on him over a younger player. Teams that are looking to add youth to their roster, as well as high-end prospects should have no problem drafting Mascherin. Although he did not want to sign with the team that drafted him, he is not the only player to do so.

Players have been doing this for years and find success later on in the NHL. Some more recent examples of this Include Fredrick Andersen, Alexander Kerfoot, Will Butcher and Jimmy Vesey. Adam Mascherin could help aid a team in the rebuild as well as helping stregthen a weak prospect pool such as the Predators, Sharks, Capitals, etc.

Adam Mascherin may be considered a risk to some teams, but he is a proved experienced prospect with high-end potential. It would be a mistake for teams in need to pass up on him, especially if they have multiple picks in the second, third, or maybe even fourth round. Overall, Mascherin is an experienced young prospect who has the skills and potential to translate his game to the NHL similarly to how Alex DeBrincat did this past season in the Windy City that is Chicago.

Teams should make sure to keep an eye on Mascherin as he may be able to make the NHL in the very near future.
