Reading Royals Re-Sign Forward Corey Mackin

The Reading Royals announced on Tuesday, September 8th that the team had come to terms with their seventh returning player for the upcoming season. Corey Mackin, a Philadelphia, PA native who played his rookie season with the Royals last year has re-signed to a standard ECHL contract. During his rookie season, the forward ranked fifth among ECHL rookies with 46 total points.

The Philly native stands at five-foot-eight and weighs in at 168 pounds. Although his scoring prowess is noteworthy, the lefty shooter also comes with a built-in fan base known as the “Mackin Maniacs”. During his rookie season, the large group of devout fans frequented home games in Reading to cheer him on.

Before joining the ECHL, Mackin played four seasons of NCAA hockey for Ferris State University. He was named NCAA Rookie of the Year for the 2015-16 season and tallied an average of 25 points per year from then on. During his final two collegiate seasons, the forward was made team captain. He joined the Royals in March 2019 where he skated in 12 games before Reading fell just short of making the playoffs.

During the 2019-20 ECHL season, Mackin played 58 games in Reading where he scored 20 goals and made 26 assists. The season was then cut short and the playoffs were cancelled due to the coronavirus, but not before Mackin helped the Royals clinch a playoff spot. “Corey brings a dynamic offensive game and was a key reason why we qualified for the playoffs. It’s a no-brainer to bring him back as a key member of our forward group.” said Kirk MacDonald, Head Coach of the Reading Royals.
