The Orlando Solar Bears announced on Monday that they have signed rookie goaltender Michael Lackey, a graduate of Providence, to a standard player agreement. Lackey spent just one year at Providence College after four years at Harvard. Lackey steps in to help the Solar Bears fill the hole left by Clint Windsor who will be playing in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch.
Orlando’s offseason thus far has seemingly focused on defence, leadership, and now, goaltending. During Lackey’s college career, he racked up a 35-28-11 record between Harvard and Providence with a 2.41 goals-against average. He also registered a .914 save percentage. Most importantly, for Orlando, is Lackey’s improvement through his years at college. Each year saw Lackey drop his goals-against average while he also managed to increase his save percentage.
Lackey, the six-foot-four, 215-pound Washington, D.C. native, will look to solidify a position in net that the Solar Bears saw struggles with before the season was halted. Lackey started all 34 of the Friars’ contests in 2019-2020 while posting a 16-11-6 record with a .922 save percentage and 2.18 goals-against average. In addition, Lackey was also named as a two-time Hockey East defensive player of the week.
