Orlando Solar Bears Add Rookie Forward Alex Gilmour

On Tuesday October 27th, the Orlando Solar Bears announced the signing of Canadian left-winger Alex Gilmour. The two sides agreed to terms on a standard player contract for the upcoming season.

Gilmour makes the jump to pro hockey after finishing his career with the St. Lawrence Saints. During his senior season, Gilmour amassed nine points, having racked up two goals along with seven assists. While doing so in 35 games, he also added 16 penalty minutes.

Through three and a half seasons at college, Gilmour recorded 23 goals along with 15 assists which made for 38 points. He did so through 126 games while also adding on 71 penalty minutes.

Gilmour jumped around in junior hockey, spending time with three teams in three different leagues. He started with the Aurora Tigers and Stouffville Spirit in the OJHL. Following that, he would spend two seasons with the Pembroke Lumber Kings in the CCHL.

Through 176 games in Junior A, Gilmour scored 146 points, having tallied 64 goals along with 82 assists. He also added 93 penalty minutes. Following that, the winger played in five games in the USHL with the Des Moines Buccaneers. During this time, he recorded a goal and two penalty minutes.

Gilmour fit in well for a balanced St. Lawrence offence that saw him place second in goals during his sophomore season. This, he did with 10 goals and led the Saints in power-play minutes (5) during his junior season. Not to be overshadowed by his play on the ice, Gilmour received numerous academic awards while attending St. Lawrence University.

The 24-year-old was named to the Commissioner’s List, and in his sophomore and junior seasons, was named to the ECAC All-Academic Team. As well, the left-handed shooter was named AHCA Scholar All-America in his junior year.

Orlando has begun fine tuning their roster as they gear up for Opening Night on the 12th of December against the Florida Everblades. The Amway Center will be ready to rock on Tuesday, December 29th when the Solar Bears play as host to the Jacksonville Icemen in the team’s home opener.
