On Thursday August 20th, the Norfolk Admirals locked up American defensemen Mike Monfredo. The two sides agreed to terms on a standard player contract for the upcoming season. Monfredo comes from the Greenville Swamp Rabbits where he finished the season after a trade from Orlando.
Monfredo is a tough a gritty player, something that the Admirals need heading into next season. The Admirals have been lacking grit, and with Monfredo now added to the roster, hopefully the Admirals can be a tough team to play against. Monfredo has played in a total of 392 ECHL games.
Monfredo has been in the league since the 2012-2013 season after he made his pro hockey debut with the Quad City Mallards from Division I hockey. During the 2018-19 season, Monfredo recorded eight goals along with 19 assists for 27 points. He also racked up a total of 207 penalty minutes.
Penalty minutes are a small price to pay to have a gritty player on the Admirals roster. His penalty minutes went down significantly over the course of the last few seasons. This year, he recorded five goals along with 14 assists for 19 points. While adding on 106 penalty minutes, he amassed these totals in 46 games played.
