On Tuesday September 22nd, the Norfolk Admirals announced the hiring of Ryan McGinnis as the team’s general manager. In doing so, he becomes the first GM in the hockey club’s existence. At 33-years-old, he’s the youngest GM in the ECHL.
McGinnis will also continue to serve on the bench as an assistant coach. It comes as no surprise that the Admirals are looking to shake things up as they finished the 2019-20 season with a record of 14-38-8-0. That made for the worst in the ECHL. Prior to joining the Admirals, McGinnis spent two years working as assistant coach with the Indy Fuel.
McGinnis Gets Promotion
Prior to starting his coaching career, McGinnis was rafted as a player in 2005 to the Anaheim Ducks. He was selected in the draft’s sixth round and would spend five years in the OHL. This included a stint with the Plymouth Whalers where he won a league championship.
After doing so in 2007, he joined the Oshawa Generals for his final season. In 2008, he would make the jump up to the AHL where he would spend five seasons. He did so, bouncing around between the AHL and ECHL. In 101 AHL games, McGinnis would pick up a goal along with 12 assists for 13 points.
Looking at his ECHL tenure, McGinnis spent five seasons between South Carolina, Florida, Norfolk and Kalamazoo. He would accumulate 13 goals along with 77 assists which made for 90 points. He did so in 187 games. With the Everblades back in 2012, McGinnis would be a part of their Kelly Cup Championship.
