The Adirondack Thunder announced on Thursday afternoon that they have signed defensemen Mathieu Brodeur to a standard player contract for the upcoming season. Mathieu is the third new face signing on with the Thunder for 2020-21. In doing so, he joins Steven Ruggiero and a familiar face in Alex Sakellaropoulos.
In a statement announcing the signing, head coach Alex Loh said that he and Brodeur have been working together since his days as a video coach with the Portland Pirates.
Thunder Continue To Strengthen Blue Line
This is a strong signing by a Thunder team who is looking to strengthen their defence after last season. He’s spent four seasons in the league, three of which came with the Thunder. During that tenure in Glens Falls,
put up 17 goals and 62 assists for 79 points in 185 games. A majority of his career has been spent playing in the AHL where he’s played in 318 games putting up 15 goals and 53 assists for 68 points during his time with the Portland Pirates, San Antonio Rampage, Chicago Wolves, Syracuse Crunch, Utica Comets and Springfield Thunderbirds.
Brodeur brings size to the Thunder blue-line at 6’6, 225lbs which is something the hockey club desperately needed. He adds experience to a young core of Thunder defencemen which include Charlie Curti and Tommy Parran. I expect Brodeur to be a second paring defecemen this year as he could see time with Steven Ruggerio on that second pairing for the Thunder this season. Expect fans to be excited to see Brodeur back in the Red and Black for next season.
