On Wednesday August 26th, the Kansas City Mavericks announced the signing of Canadian forward Lane Scheidl. The two sides agreed to terms on a standard player contract for the upcoming season.
Scheidl spent the last two seasons playing hockey overseas with HK Nitra. Before joining the club in Slovakia, Scheidl spent four seasons playing in the ECHL with the Kalamazoo Wings.
Last year with HK Nitra, Scheidl recorded 16 goals along with 11 assists for 27 points. While adding on 58 penalty minutes, he amassed these totals in 53 games. During his two seasons in Slovakia, Scheidl scored 36 goals along with 16 assist for 52 points. He managed to do so in 100 games.
He was no stranger to the sin bin either, recording a total of 58 penalty minutes. Overall, in two seasons combined, he collected a total of 134 minutes.
In his four seasons with Kalamazoo, Scheidl put up 76 goals along with 84 assists for 160 points. While adding on 247 penalty minutes, he compiled these totals in 264 games. His best season came in 2016-17 when he scored 28 goals while adding 23 assists. This made for a total of 51 points.
Scheidl is a prototypical grinder or power forward who is going to bring physicality to the ice every night. He has also been around pro hockey for a while now, including a good stint in the ECHL, so he should be able to set the tone for this otherwise pretty young roster. Beyond his toughness and professionalism, Scheidl, a native of Saskatoon, is deceptively quick and also has good hands. The winger should be poised to play a significant role for the Mavericks this season.
