It’s been a relatively quiet offseason thus far in south west Michigan with just a few signings finalized over the summer. That came to a screeching halt Thursday as the Kalamazoo Wings signed forward Mathieu Roy.
Mathieu has been a proven force to be reckoned with all throughout his career as a pro. In his early years in junior hockey, the native of Amos, Quebec scored 144 goals and 145 assists. This made for 289 points which the winger amassed in 268 games.
Roy made his pro debut in the ECHL in the 2007-2008. He did so with the Pensacola Ice Pilots, and later, the Everblades from ’08-2014. While playing in Estero, Florida, Roy was appointed team captain and won a Kelly Cup back in 2013. He achieved this at 25-years-old. Throughout his ECHL career, Roy has scored 149 goals and 188 assists for 337 points. He’s done so in 384 games thus far.
Mathieu has spent the last five seasons in the EIHL between Sheffield and Glasgow. This all the while seeing continued success as a pro. In 238 games, Roy scored 125 goals and 124 assists for 249 points.
In a statement from head coach Nick Bootland with regards to the signing of Mathieu Roy, he said, “Mathieu is a proven champion. He’s a tremendous leader and has been for a long time. He is deadly in front of the net, can control the play with his puck protection and as a competitor plays the game hard.” Fans will certainly be very happy to welcome him to Wings Event Center come the fourth of December.
