EA Sports announced on Monday that Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin will appear on the cover of EA Sports NHL 21.
This will not be Ovechkin’s first outing as the cover athlete for the NHL games, as 14 years ago, he graced the cover of NHL 07. The only other player to have more than one appearance on the cover was Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews who appeared on the covers of NHL 11 and NHL 16.
Alex Ovechkin is heralded as one of the greatest goal scorers of all time, and at 34 years of age, has yet to show any signs of slowing down. Last season, he scored 48 goals along with 19 assists in 68 games played. This made for a total of 67 points.
The Washington Capitals were ousted in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by Mathew Barzal and the New York Islanders in a five-game game series. Ovechkin recorded four goals and five assists in Washington’s eight games played.
EA Sports will have a separate event taking place later on Monday where fans of the long-time sports game franchise can see the new features being added to the latest entry.
NHL 21 will launch on Xbox One and Playstation this fall on October 16th worldwide. Although there is no next generation console version in the works, the base game will be backwards compatible, allowing for use on the newer consoles.
