The Adirondack Thunder announced their fifth signing on Thursday afternoon, with defenseman Blake Thompson returning to Glens Falls for next season. As well, he becomes the first piece of the hockey club’s blue-line. Announcing the signing via Facebook Live, Head Coach Alex Loh referred to the signing as a ‘no-brainer’ and called the left-handed shooter a player he can trust.
Blake Thompson Is Staying In Adirondack
Commencing the offseason with the signing of four forwards, the Thunder brought back Blake Thompson for his third season with the team. A native of Listowel, Ontario, the 28-year-old is among the names who took a year off from hockey due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 171 career contests, 158 of which he spent with Adirondack, Thompson amassed 41 points, putting up nine goals, while adding 32 assists. Prior to joining the Thunder, Thompson also saw time with the Orlando Solar Bears and Cincinnati Cyclones.
That followed his graduation from St. Norbert College, where he spent four seasons in Division III hockey. Taking to the ice in 112 collegiate contests, Thompson amassed 73 points, recording 19 goals, while adding 54 assists. His addition to the Thunder roster comes as no surprise given he’s not going to be a huge help offensively, but will be a huge asset when it comes to the defensive zone.
He also adds a physical element to the blue-line, which I think Adirondack will need after losing Michael Sdao, who played a very physical game. The 28-year-old also knows the Thunder organization and it’s going to be key to have a few familiar faces present to help with all the new names joining for the 2021-22 campaign. I also expect him to be in the running for a letter this season, as the New Jersey Devils affiliate will require a new leadership group.
