On Tuesday August 18th, the Wheeling Nailers announced the re-signing of American forward Will Smith for next season. For Smith, it will be his third year in the ECHL and his second with the Wheeling Nailers.
Taking a look at last at last season, Smith recorded four goals along with six assists for a total of 10 points. While also adding 19 penalty minutes, he amassed these numbers in 44 games played. This also includes a goal which the left-winger scored in his Nailers debut.
Willy has played in parts of three ECHL seasons with the Indy Fuel, Utah Grizzlies and Adirondack Thunder. He also had a lot of success in the SPHL with the Peoria Rivermen. There, he amassed a total of 55 points in 62 games played.
Smith is a versatile player, as cited on Tuesday by head coach Mark French. “Willy is a versatile player, who can play different roles on our team. We really like his work ethic and his energy. He is also very excited to get back to Wheeling.”
In a statement from the left-handed shooter upon signing his contract on Tuesday morning, Smith said of the chance to return, “I really liked how the Wheeling community embraced me, plus we had such a fun group of guys. We have a new coach and a new atmosphere, so guys will be bringing their best.”
To date, the Nailers have signed forwards Alec Butcher, Brad Drobot, Andrew Gaus, Luke Lynch, Will Smith, and reportedly, Carlos Fornaris. Meanwhile, the defensive core is made of Jeremy Beaudry, Marc-Olivier Duquette and Shane Zumeski.
