It was mentioned that the Vancouver Canucks are stuck with a cap space described as flat and their biggest priorities are locking up Jakob Markstrom and Canadian right-winger Tyler Toffoli. So what would a possible trade of winger Brock Boeser bring to the New Jersey Devils? In the case of Boeser against the Canucks being traded to New Jersey, Brock brings a 23-year-old right wing shooter the Devils sorely need. During a typical 60 plus game season, Brock can easily hit 25 goals and 56 points rather easily.
The New Jersey Devils have plenty of cap space and extra assets to move. Plus, with Tom Fitzgerald as the new GM, he is very likely going to wait out phase two and see whether he has all three picks in the first round, otherwise, he might end with one or two in round one. But the big kicker to having $26,245,001 USD in cap space is allowing the New Jersey Devils to have over $20, 370 million to utilize, per CapFriendly.
Boeser’s contract doesn’t expire until 2022-2023 to hit the free agent market. The big key that has been mentioned is that Tom Fitzgerald has been in touch with Jesper Bratt and MacKenzie Blackwood’s agents where that $20,370 million is still in play.
Having Boeser around would mean Kyle Palmieri and Nikita Gusev get to share the responsibilities with a young stud like Brock around. However, by 2021-22, it’s likely Travis Zajac ends up retiring and the Devils have over $36,324,999 available if Zajac doesn’t stay for another season. Palmieri and Nikita Gusev will likely get extended by three-five years. Also, Jack Hughes will be due for a big, long-term payday before Pavel Zacha and Miles Wood receive contract offers.
Tom Fitzgerald will be very careful but very wise at using the available cap space. Every move will be calculated by Fitzgerald before the cap does go up. Prudence, patience and wisdom will all pay very close attention after bringing in a great goal scorer like Boeser. Having some left over cash for this upcoming season and assets from the 2021, Fitzgerald could sign or trade a young and upcoming alternative trade target if making a move for Boeser doesn’t occur. However, Mikhail Sergachev could be a nice snag for a nicely rounded defensemen or even Colin Miller to add a veteran physical presence if Boeser’s talent is a bit overvalued.
