Soo Greyhounds Suffer Back-To-Back Losses; Peca Shows Veteran Poise

The Soo Greyhounds suffered their first loss of the season this past weekend at the GFL Memorial Garden. Not only did they suffer their first loss, but they also went back-to-back losing games 4-3 to their opponents and face their first test of adversity this season. The Soo Greyhounds began their two-in-two hosting the Sudbury Wolves and the soon-to-be-famous Quinton Byfield followed by hosting the Peterborough Petes for an afternoon showdown.

The Soo Greyhounds would find themselves behind the eight ball very early into Saturday’s game against the Sudbury Wolves. Sudbury opened the scoring quickly and with three unanswered goals by the 7:32 mark of the first period, the Greyhounds would have to battle uphill. Jaden Peca got red and white on the board at the 10:53 mark of the first period which brought the Hounds within two, but David Levin would put the Wolves’ fourth and final goal in at 14:00 of the first period to make it 4-1.

The Greyhounds rallied for a solid second and third with goals from Jaden Peca (2) and Ryan O’Rourke but in the dying seconds they just could not pull together the tying goal. Goal scorers for Sudbury Wolves were Owen Gilhula, Owen Robinson, Macauley Carson and David Levin. It is worth noting that the Greyhounds kept Byfield off the scoring sheet.

The following afternoon, the Soo Greyhounds would play host to the Peterborough Petes which ultimately would turn out to be the Greyhounds back-to-back 4-3 loss, but not without a valiant effort from the team and a good game played by Ethan Taylor in between the pipes. Goal scorers for the Soo Greyhounds were Joe Carroll, Jaden Peca and Rory Kerins. Goal scorers for the Peterborough Petes were Dustin Hutton, Cam Butler, Max Grondin and Nick Robertson.

Jaden Peca

Jaden Peca had two big nights despite the Greyhounds not taking a W. Jaden combined for three goals and one assist (four points in two games) over the weekend and every time his line was on the ice, he was creating energy. He is the veteran voice on the team as you can see the players follow and perk up when he hits the ice.

This was a smart move by Kyle Raftis and co. by picking up Peca last year for only a sixth-round pick as Peca is now a key piece to the future development of the prospects on this team.

The Pipes

Tough one this weekend for Christian Propp as he was yanked after allowing three goals within the first seven and a half minutes of the first period Saturday night. Propp was pulled and Ethan Taylor came in and took the crease for the remainder of the weekend. (Greyhounds played back-to-back games, so it’s safe to assume Taylor was going to play Sunday afternoon against the Peterborough Petes anyways).
