On Friday, the Montreal Canadiens announced that they have signed Jeff Petry to a four-year contract extension. The deal with the organization includes an AAV of $6.25 million per season.
In 2019-20, Petry, 32-years-old, skated in 71 games while amassing 40 points. He did so, recording eleven goals along with 29 assists while adding 26 penalty minutes. For Petry, it was his third season where he racked up 40 points or more. As well, in those three years, Petry would also finish first on the team’s defensive end.
Petry led the team in hits with 177 hits while also leading in takeaways. While managing to do so with 30, Petry also scored two goals and had 10 assists throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Taking a look at his career, Petry has played eleven NHL seasons between the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens. Doing so in 680 games, Petry has scored 69 goals and 184 assists for 253 points. Through 25 games in the playoffs, Petry has recorded seven points which he has done on five goals along with two assists.
Petry has scored 52 goals since having joined the Canadiens back in 2015. This ties him with Shea Weber for 16th on the list among Montreal defensemen. The Oilers selected him in the second round (45th overall) back in 2006.
Prior to Friday’s announcement, Petry had one year remaining on his six-year contract which he signed upon arrival. He was due to become an unrestricted free agent, but chose to re-sign early rather then waiting it out.
