Kansas City Mavericks add Willie Corrin and Giorgio Estephan

The Kansas City Mavericks have agreed to terms with defenseman Willie Corrin for the upcoming 2020 – 2021 season. Corrin spent last season with HKM Zvolen in Slovakia, where he was a teammate of former Maverick Michael Parks.

Last season in Slovakia, Corrin scored nine goals to go along with 38 assists for 47 points in 53 games. He also logged an astounding 136 penalty minutes. Corrin has played in 80 total ECHL games over his career, most recently with the Brampton Beast during the 2017 – 2018 season. He has 14 goals and 36 assists for 50 points in those games. He has also played in 23 AHL games, where he has scored two goals and five assists for seven points.

The 29-year-old has good size, standing at 6’1″ and weighing 205 pounds. Corrin is a pretty good athlete who can pass the puck at a very high level. He’s also very tough and not afraid to stick up for his teammates. Corrin is now the ninth defenseman on the Mavericks roster for the upcoming season. The Mavericks training camp is gearing up to be very competitive and guys are going to really have to earn their spot on the team.

In another major signing for the Mavericks, they have agreed to a deal with forward Giorgio Estephan for the upcoming season. Estephan, who is 23, was a sixth-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres back in 2015. He has spent most of his professional career playing for the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers and the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.

Newfoundland Growlers / Jeff Parsons

Last year, in 44 games for the Growlers, Estephan recorded 18 goals and 34 assists for 52 total points, putting him over a point per game. He also appeared in eight games for the Toronto Marlies, in which he had a goal and an assist. Estephan is a very promising young hockey player and the Mavericks are very lucky to acquire a player of his talent.

The 23-year-old Edmonton native is decently sized at 6’0″ tall and weighing 196 pounds. He’s a very good skater with a deadly shot and great hands. He is capable of making highlight-reel plays every time he gets on the ice, but he is also more than capable of making all of the right reads and passes inside the offensive zone. Estephan has improved every year he’s been playing professionally, and this season should be no different.

With Matt Schmalz’s recent trade to the Reading Royals, the Mavericks remain at 15 forwards and 26 total players. As I said before, the guys currently under contract are going to have to battle to make this team. The Mavericks are absolutely loaded with talent, and I’m very excited about our chances in the upcoming season.
