Training camps for all teams are slated to open for phase three on Monday. Like many teams, the New York Islanders are going to enter the restart with a very healthy squad. So, who cracks the opening night lineup against the Florida Panthers?
Training camp will see Jared Coreau, Christopher Gibson, Thomas Greiss and Semyon Varlamov report to Long Island. It is possible too that Jakub Skarek or Linus Soderstrom may attend. Ilya Sorokin is not likely to make the trip to New York just yet.
New York will almost certainly start Semyon Varlamov on opening night. However, Greiss did go 4-2 against the Panthers in the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Adam Pelech will be healthy and ready to play games for the Islanders when the season starts up again. Noah Dobson, Andy Greene and Thomas Hickey will also be present and available for the Islanders. New York’s formation should be looking like this:
Adam Pelech – Ryan Pulock
Nick Leddy – Johnny Boychuk
Devon Toews – Scott Mayfield
Scratched: Noah Dobson, Andy Greene, Thomas Hickey.
Last year’s playoffs should tell you that the Islanders have some offence. They likely will rely heavily on Josh Bailey, Mathew Barzal, Anthony Beauvillier, Jordan Eberle, Anders Lee, Brock Nelson and Jean-Gabriel Pageau to score or create plays. Barry Trotz has been inconsistent for much of the season with line combinations, especially since guys have been bouncing both in and out of the Islanders lineup.
Anders Lee – Mathew Barzal – Jordan Eberle
Josh Bailey – Brock Nelson – Anthony Beauvillier
Andrew Ladd – JG Pageau – Derick Brassard
Matt Martin – Casey Cizikas – Cal Clutterbuck
Scratched: Kieffer Bellows, Ross Johnston, Otto Koivula, Leo Komarov, Tom Kuhnhackl.
